ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

It took a while, but the Atlanta Public School Board agreed Monday night to bring back School Superintendent Erroll Davis.

"The six months on his current contract, then the 18-month additional extension, but we have given ourselves the flexibility within that time where if we hire a new superintendent, we can terminate the contract within a 90-day notice," said Chairman of the Board Reuben McDaniel.

Davis took over a district on probation with its accrediting agency, dealt with countless meetings on redistricting and inherited a cheating scandal that gained national attention. The board spent hours debating how long Davis should stick around before turning things over to a new superintendent. The sticking point appeared to be whether one or two years would suffice.

"To say in two years we are going to wrap everything up, there is just no way we are going to wrap everything up in the next year in the next two years," said school board member Brenda Muhammad.

"I believe it is time for a permanent superintendent, having said that, I believe that a year in terms of an extension, but at this point another 18 months is sufficient time," said Yolanda Johnson, a member of the APS School Board.

The process was made more difficult because the board needed a super majority to reach a decision. It took six tries before the final vote. The process frustrated many parents in attendance.

"It is very tedious work that I would have hoped they could have done some of it before the vote, behind the scenes before we got here," said Abby Martin, a parent who attended the meeting.

School officials say the search for a permanent superintendent will begin right away.
