ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A former Atlanta police officer was convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl he met while on duty.

Bernett Collins, 43, pled guilty to sexual battery, distributing sexually explicit material to a minor and violation of oath of office.

The incident apparently happened between January and April 2010.

According to court documents, Collins met the then-13-year-old during a call at the teen's home.

After meeting her, he randomly visited and sent text messages to her.

The teen told officials he requested topless pictures or just wearing underwear.

Collins also sent explicit pictures of himself to the minor, according to reports.

Collins also hugged and groped the victim inappropriately while at her home, prompting the sexual battery charge.

The victim eventually reported officer Collins to her school resource officer.

Collins was fired by the Atlanta Police Department in May 2012 for violating departmental policies.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kelly Amanda Lee sentenced Collins to five years' probation.

Collins must register as a sex offender and may not have contact with minors, including the victim.
