A Clayton County Police officer is in serious condition after being run over by a pickup truck Wednesday.
Officer Michael Hooks was injured while responding to a burglary at an abandoned K-Mart parking lot off Old Dixie Road near Frontage Road.
"I was serving some customers and all of a sudden it sounded like a machine gun," witness Susie Miranda said.
Miranda heard gun shots while working inside a restaurant near the incident.
It turns out Clayton County police fired shots at two suspects they say were burglarizing the old K-Mart building.
"It has some materials behind the building, some materials like metal backhoe buckets, and we believe at this point they could be involved in metal theft," Clayton County Police Major Rick Webster said.
Webster said shortly after officers arrived on scene, one suspect took off running and Hooks chased him.
Then the other suspect, identified as Thomas Paige, 36, jumped in a black truck and ran over Hooks. After crashing the truck, Paige got out and ran and hasn't been seen since.
"We very much need the public's help to please step up to the plate and try and give us some information on the whereabouts of this gentleman," Webster said.
Police said Paige is considered armed and dangerous and may be a fugitive from a different jurisdiction. He's described as 6'4" and weighing more than 250 pounds, wearing all black.
"It kind of makes me want to change my job, change the place and even move out of this city," Miranda said.
Hooks sustained a severe head injury in the incident and is being treated at a local hospital.
CBS Atlanta News has learned that the officer has been with the Clayton County Police Department for more than 10 years.
