Cobb County Schools employee charged with production of child porn

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A Cobb County Schools employee has been arrested and charged with receipt and production of child pornography.

Stanley Keith Johnson's name appears on the Cobb County Schools website. He is listed as dealing with transportation for the district.

A law enforcement source said the case against Johnson involves an 8 or 9-year-old boy, but it is unclear if Johnson came in contact with the boy through his job with the school district.

Jay Dillon, a spokesman for Cobb County Schools, said Johnson has worked for the district since 1989 and is a field coordinator.

"That's really shocking and it's hard for me to believe personally, because he's been such a friendly guy to us and I just never got any kind of heebie jeebie creepies from him at all," said Johnson's neighbor Kelly Stevens.

CBS Atlanta News also learned that Johnson is a Cub Scout leader and a volunteer at First Baptist Church in Mableton.

Senior Pastor Rev. Stephen Byrd released the following statement:

"On December 11, 2012 we were informed by the Cobb County Police Department that Mr. Stan Johnson had been arrested that morning on charges of child pornography. As you know, Stan Johnson was a volunteer in our ministry and was a seasonal worker at our Summer Day Camp. We were both appalled and heart broken over this news.

"The safety of children remains paramount at First Baptist Church Mableton. After learning of Mr. Johnson's arrest, the church has taken the following steps:

  • In our initial meeting with the Cobb County Police Department we pledged our full cooperation in working with the authorities in this matter.
  • Mr. Johnson has been prohibited from returning to Church property, effective immediately.
  • A notification was sent to church members calling a meeting scheduled to be held on Wednesday, December 12th at 6:00pm to inform the church of the situation.
  • This letter was prepared to families whose children have been involved in our ministries.

"Our priority is the protection of the children that are entrusted to our care. To that end, we require background checks on all employees and volunteers in our ministry. Stan Johnson passed this check.

"I know that we are not alone in our shock at these accusations but we remain steadfast in our faith that God's grace is sufficient and that He will be with all involved.

"If you suspect your child is affected in any way please call 911. If you have any other questions please call the church office to speak with a member of our staff."

Dillon said Johnson is on administrative leave pending termination.

The U.S. Attorneys Office is handling the case.
