Parents: 'We know who hit and killed our child'

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Twana Bonner and Robert Love Jr. said they know who hit and killed their 5-year-old son, Robert "Buddy" Love III.

"He didn't meet a stranger. He was always happy going and he always had a smile on his face. He loved to play football," said Love.

Athletic and happy - that's how Love said he'll remember the son he now has to bury.

"God knows, I love my baby so much," Bonner said through tears.

Bonner spoke low. And as expected from a mother whose young child was killed, she had a hard time putting her feelings into words.

Their son died after he was hit by a vehicle Tuesday. The child had just gotten off the school bus. He was walking with other kids inside the Kennsington Station Apartments when he was hit only a few feet from his home.

"It is our opinion that this accident was caused solely by the negligence of the Federal Express driver," said the family's attorney, Forrest Johnson.

DeKalb County police put crime scene tape around a FedEx truck after the incident. They impounded the truck but did not arrest the driver.

Police said at this time they do not have enough evidence to charge him, and they have conflicting stories about another vehicle being involved.

"I don't understand how anyone has come up with a story about how any other vehicle was involved. These people were there within seconds of impact," said Johnson.

Johnson said he interviewed witnesses who all pointed the finger at the FedEx driver. He said among them was the 10-year-old boy who was walking with Buddy.

"What he says is this: They were walking along, the FedEx driver came behind them at a high rate of speed. The FedEx driver almost hit him, he moved out the way. The FedEx driver then made contact with Buddy," said Johnson.
