SW Atlanta residents hold meeting to discuss recent rash of murders

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A recent rash of murders in one southwest Atlanta neighborhood prompted community leaders to take a stand.

Claiborne White lives on Beecher Street and knows the crime stats for his community all too well. He held a community meeting Friday to discuss concerns.

"As a community member it concerns me very greatly," White said.

White said there have been three murders during the past month within a couple blocks of one another.

Two people were shot to death in different incidents on South Gordon Street including Terry Porter, a businessman who owned an assisted living facility and was a real estate broker.

Porter was shot and killed in front of his home during an apparent robbery. The third murder happened a week ago, when a man was gunned down on Beecher Street.

"Do you feel safe in this neighborhood?" CBS Atlanta News reporter Adam Murphy asked.

"I have felt safe since the day that I moved in here and I have lived here for three years," White said.

"Do you feel safe?" Murphy asked.

"Pretty much. I still do," southwest Atlanta resident Scott Smith said.

Most residents told us they feel safe because they are working with the Atlanta Police Department to address the issue. Police said crime is actually down in the area 10 percent over the past year.

"We've increased our patrols on all of our watches, we've increased our check points trying to interact more as they come and go from a preventive stance," Atlanta Police Capt. Stacie Gibbs said.
