GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The Gwinnett Police Department has increased patrols at schools in the county in the wake of Friday's massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut.

Authorities say Adam Lanza, 20, killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Friday. He turned the gun on himself as authorities closed in on him.

"Officers will be visible and pro-active, looking for suspicious activity and persons," said Sgt. Brian Doan.

The extra patrols will last for three days at both public and private schools in the county.

"The emergency operation plan has been in place for quite a while, and we will now be implementing it by allocating man power to patrol schools within our jurisdiction," said Doan. "This action plan will not take away man power reserved for calls for service, nor will overtime be used. We will be utilizing resources within the department and temporarily assigning these officers to patrol the 102 schools within our jurisdiction."

Officers and deputies in Cherokee County said they will also provide an increased presence at every Cherokee County School throughout the week.

Authorities stress that no threats have been made and is in response to the shooting in Connecticut.
