Former Douglasville mayor sentenced on theft charges

Posted: Updated:

The former mayor of Douglasville has been sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to 91 charges of theft.

Claud Mitchell Thompson was also ordered to pay over $28,000 to the city, and must never again seek to hold a public office.

Thompson was indicted by the Douglas County District Attorney in September and pleaded guilty to submitting requests to be paid for attending meetings that were not city sanctioned.

Thompson served as mayor for 12 years and left office in December of 2011.

Douglasville is about 20 miles east of Atlanta.
