Should teachers carry guns in the classroom?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A national debate has come to Georgia five days after the massacre in Newtown, CT, where 20 children and six adults were gunned down.

In Michigan, a bill was vetoed this week that would have allowed gun owners with extra training to carry their concealed weapons in schools and daycare centers, among other public places.

Many are wondering what should happen here in Georgia.

CBS Atlanta spoke with the head of a teachers union who says what is needed are stronger gun control laws.

Verdaillia Turner, president of the Georgia Federation of Teachers, was angered by the massacre in Newtown.

Furious is her response to suggestions of arming teachers to thwart future school attacks.

"When we bring more weapons into schools, we only exacerbate the situation," said Turner.

Turner believes what secures schools and other public venues from accused killers like Adam Lanza  are bans on assault rifles and tougher gun laws.

"What's the purpose of those semi-automatic weapons? What would be the problem in taking those weapons and making it criminal to even have a semi-automatic weapon?" Turner said.

Turner is suggesting common sense laws never get written by state of national lawmakers because of the influence of powerful gun advocates like the National Rifle Association.

"The answers are very simple, but we can't even get to the discussion to what answers are for the profit motives," Turner said.

Clayton County Interim Superintendent Luvenia Jackson agrees.

She told CBS Atlanta Monday schools should be a sanctuary of learning.

"Teachers are armed with instructional practices.  That's what teachers are armed with.  That's what we come to work for. We come to instruct and to teach," Jackson said.

Kelly Kennett, president of www.georgiacarry.org, wrote on her blog.

"Citizens, including teachers and school administrators, should have an opportunity to defend themselves and the children in their care," Kennett wrote.
