Nonprofit organization, beer distributor team up to help the disabled

Posted: Updated:

A nonprofit organization and a beer distributor have come together to help people in need of wheelchairs and other medical equipment.

The partnership is helping people like Willie Ellington, whose wheelchair stopped working.

"The wheel broke on it and I couldn't roll on it. I couldn't get around," Ellington said.

So Ellington's friend, Anthony Howard, brought him to Friends of Disabled Adults and Children to get help.

"I am so proud of this association because they didn't turn their back on this man," Howard said.

FODAC is a nonprofit organization that takes gently used medical equipment, fixes it up and gives it to people who have nowhere else to turn.

"We really don't bill the patient for any of this the Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance, that is the problem they are having when they come to us," said Chris Brand, the president and CEO of FODAC. "They don't have the funds or co-pays, their insurance does not pay for it."

But getting the donated equipment from its drop-off centers to FODAC's central warehouse was a problem.

"It is just so costly for us to run trucks all over Atlanta to pick up one or two items," Brand said.

But Brand said now, thanks to Eagle Rock, a beverage distributor, things are much better.

"We pick up the medical supplies, such as wheelchairs and walkers, all that stuff from mobility works up in Marietta," said Kelly Coffed, with Eagle Rock. "We send a truck up there, load up and bring it here to Stone Mountain."

Brand said the help from Eagle Rock makes a big difference.

"When we can get someone to help us with that load, that saves us even more time and money so we can stretch our dollars at the nonprofit further," Brand said.

That's money that can be used to help more people like Ellington.

"I thank them so much for all they've done," Ellington said. "I appreciate it. God knows I do."
