GRIFFIN, GA (CBS46) -

Kathy Goodson calls her granddaughter, Lily, her Christmas miracle. The 5-year-old started breathing on her own for the first time since she was attacked by her family dog two weeks ago.

"Lily is a gift from God. She is everybody's hero, especially mine. You just couldn't ask for a more wonderful person to be around. She makes the sun shine on a rainy day. That's Lily," Kathy Goodson said.

Lily is Kathy Goodson's first grandchild.

"We're like peas and carrots, usually inseparable," Kathy Goodson said.

Kathy Goodson cares for her four grandchildren. Two weeks ago, she heard something unusual. She heard Lily cry for help.

"I heard Lily scream as loud as she could and that's when I went to the gate and both dogs were over her," Kathy Goodson said.

Their family pet, an 8-year-old American bulldog, wouldn't let go.

"He was not even hearing me. He never responded to anything I said, even when I was grabbing him, pushing him back and throwing him," Kathy Goodson said.

Kathy Goodson fought so hard, she lost her two front teeth biting the dog, doing whatever she could to get him to let go of Lily. The attack ended when police arrived and shot the dog.

"It's a mixture of complete shock, total not even being able to understand what, why, how could you do something like this to someone you loved and protected for five years," Kathy Goodson said.

Lily has extensive bites on her face and all over her body. For the first time since being in the hospital, Lily spoke to Kathy Goodson.

"That was my Christmas miracle. And if people don't believe in miracles anymore, let me tell you, they're there. They are definitely there," Kathy Goodson said.

Police called Kathy Goodson a hero for her actions trying to save Lily. It's Lily, Kathy Goodson calls her hero. She's also thankful for the police and all of the medical personnel who have treated or cared for Lily.
