Rare coin dropped in Salvation Army kettle

Posted: Updated:

A secret Santa dropped a rare South African Krugerrand coin in a Salvation Army kettle Friday afternoon.

"I just can't believe it," says Major Todd Hawks, Area Commander for Metro Atlanta, "We have been praying for something special to happen this Christmas and it did."

The Krugerrand was discovered during the routine counting of the coins. It is believed to have been received in the Red Kettle that was located at the Nordstrom store at Perimeter Mall.

"We estimate the coin to be worth approximately $1,700," says Major Hawks. "Although the donor is unknown to us, they are not to God.  We are very grateful for the gift and wish Christmas blessings to the donor."

The Krugerrand is a rare South African gold coin and is very valuable because of its purity.

Money raised during the Christmas Season helps provide and support services in 13 metro counties throughout the year.
