Community replaces family Christmas gifts destroyed by fire

Posted: Updated:

On Sunday, Sharon and Steve Kent were all ready for Christmas Day, their gifts were all wrapped, their shopping done. But that all changed when something in their garage caught fire destroying their home and everything in it.

"I saw a whirl of flames on the dryer and just the whirl of flames was enough to really envelope the flame and kick it in overdrive," Steve Kent said. "The flames were so high they singed a little bit of my forehead."

The family said they made it out just in time, saving all four children inside and two guinea pigs.

"We sat there and it was like what would have happened had this been at 10 o'clock at night with everybody asleep?" Steve Kent said. "As fast as that fire ripped through the house, we could have had kids trapped upstairs and not able to get down."

The family has lived in the home for more than a decade. Steve Kent works at Noble Systems, a telecommunications company based in Atlanta. Steve Kent said his co-workers have helped replace gifts that were lost, and clothes that were destroyed.

"We are so grateful for people who have brought gifts for the kids, just a teddy bear and cookies was so nice for the kids to be in the spirit," Sharon Kent said.

The family said some neighbors gave them cash, checks and clothes. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints also helped get the family back on its feet.

"I am really grateful we got out alive, and no one got hurt," Rebecca Kent said. "And thank you to the people out there supporting us, helping us out."

"The most important thing is our family is together," Steve Kent said. "We are here, we are all in one piece and it may not be the Christmas we will forget but the biggest part of Christmas is the family and the togetherness."

The family doesn't know when they will be able to find a new place to live, but they are hoping after Christmas they can start looking.
