Storms knock out power to thousands in Georgia

ATLANTA (AP) -

Strong storms were sweeping across south and central Georgia, part of a large storm system that dumped snow and sleet on the nation's midsection and unleashed damaging tornadoes in Alabama.

Georgia Power officials said early Wednesday morning that 5,400 customers were without power statewide.

Though Christmas Day forecasts included the chance of tornadoes in metro Atlanta, the line of thunderstorms passed the city overnight with no widespread damage or injuries reported.

In Alabama, storms knocked down trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark in the hard-hit Mobile area. Scott Rye, a senior warden at Trinity Episcopal Church in midtown Mobile, says a large section of the church's roof is missing and the front wall of the parish wall is gone.
