HALL COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A former Hall County jailer has been arrested after an incident at the jail in September.

On Sept. 8, Dustin James Charlton was involved in a physical altercation with a combative inmate, according to the sheriff's department.

After the inmate was brought under control and placed in handcuffs, authorities said Charlton struck the inmate's head with his hand.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents obtained warrants for Charlton's arrest on Wednesday,  and he turned himself into the Hall County Jail on Thursday afternoon.

He was charged with one count of simple battery and one count of Violation of Oath of Office.

Charlton was released on $15,000 bond, signed by a local bonding company.

Charlton was also the subject of a 2010 investigation into a similar incident in which he struck an inmate. Charlton was suspended for five days without pay for his actions in that occurrence, according to authorities.

Charlton, who was fired in September, had been employed with the sheriff's office since May 2010.
