STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS46) -

An off-duty DeKalb County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a suspected bank robber at the Capitol City Bank and Trust Company on Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain Friday morning.

Sheriff's office spokesman Adrion Bell said the attempted robbery happened around 10:30 a.m.  Bell said the deputy was in the bank conducting personal business when he became suspicious of the suspect.

Bell said the suspect, identified as Eric D. Roberts, 30, of Lithonia, had a gun and refused to surrender when the deputy confronted him.

Fearing for his safety, Bell said the off-duty deputy opened fire and shot Roberts, who then jumped out a bank window.

Roberts collapsed outside the bank and was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

It is unknown how many times the deputy shot Roberts.

CBS Atlanta News learned Roberts was released from the DeKalb County jail on Dec. 11. He was picked up and taken there on a warrant out of Henry County for obstruction of officers.

No one inside the bank was injured and no money was taken.
