Applications for conceal carry permits triple in Cobb County

MARIETTA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Cobb County Probate Court has seen a boost in conceal carry gun permits over the past two weeks and that has some people waiting hours to get registered.

In the basement of the Cobb County Superior Courthouse, nearly 20 gun owners waited their turns to get fingerprinted.

"I have been waiting here nearly four hours," Mike Mosquito said.

Mosquito said he has a conceal carry permit in Alabama, but since he moved to Georgia, he wants to register his weapon in Cobb County.

"Since they are talking about changing the gun laws, I decided to get it renewed here in Georgia," Mosquito said.

He was frustrated that Cobb County only has one person taking fingerprints for the background checks.

"They need a streamlined process for this, but a four-hour wait is pretty excessive to get a gun carry permit, and that's just to get fingerprinted - you aren't taking anything home today."

According to a probate court clerk, the past two weeks have seen a steady increase in conceal carry permit applications. On Friday they processed more than 130 applications. The number of applications, before things got busy, according to the clerk was 30 to 40 a day. The wait time then was roughly 10 minutes.

"Today, not quite two hours I've been waiting," said Myrna Smith.

Smith said she understands why so many people are registering for concealed carry permits, but said the wait is too much.

"With all this new technology, the machine should go faster than what it is," Smith said.

Smith said she is a supporter of the Second Amendment but thinks there should be stricter regulations on who can own a firearm.

"I agree to a certain extent it is the people you have to watch, not the guns," Smith said. "If everyone was permitted to have a gun, that was mentally able, we would have a lot less problems."

If you want to avoid the longest lines, court workers recommend you show up at least an hour before court opens at 8 a.m.
