Police issue warning about celebratory gunfire

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA/AP) -

Atlanta police are reminding New Year's Eve partiers that celebratory gunfire is illegal.

In the past, some people have pointed guns toward the sky and fired shots into the air. But that can prove deadly.

In 2009, a stray bullet struck and killed Marquel Peters, 4, as he attended a New Year's Eve church service.

Annette Jordan, a Jonesboro resident, also understands the problem all too well. She said a stray bullet flew into her home a few years ago.

"It could've hit one of my children. It could've hit me," Jordan said.

Police said anyone caught participating in celebratory gunfire could face a misdemeanor charge and a fine up to $1,000.
