Wife of U.S. Rep. John Lewis passes away, funeral set for Monday

Lillian Miles Lewis, the wife of U.S. Rep. John Lewis, has passed away.

The representative's communications director released news of Lillian Miles Lewis' death Monday afternoon, saying that she had passed away in Atlanta earlier in the day.

No other information regarding her passing was provided.

John Lewis is a Democrat who represents Georgia's 5th Congressional District, which covers Atlanta and several surrounding cities.

"On behalf of the people of the city of Atlanta, I extend my deepest condolences to the Lewis and Miles families on the passing of Lillian Miles Lewis," said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed in a statement. "Mrs. Lewis was active in social justice movements across the country and was an articulate ambassador on behalf of her adopted home city of Atlanta. She was a strong and steadfast supporter of her husband, whom she married in 1968 at Ebenezer Baptist Church. She will be missed."

John Lewis and his wife have one son, John Miles, according to the congressman's website.

Funeral services for Lillian Miles Lewis will be held Monday, Jan. 7 at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Services are scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

John Lewis and his wife were married 44 years ago at Ebenezer. 

Until Sunday Jan. 6, flowers may be sent to the Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home, 1003 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., SW, Atlanta, GA 30310, 404-758-1731. After Sunday, flowers should be sent directly to Ebenezer Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted by the American Kidney Fund on behalf of Lillian Miles Lewis.  

They should be made payable to the American Kidney Fund and sent by mail to the American Kidney Fund Headquarters, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852. In your correspondence and as a memo on the donation itself, please indicate that the funds are a Memorial Donation for Lillian Miles Lewis to benefit the AKF office in the state of Georgia.
