Ebenezer Baptist Church calls for stricter gun laws

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Thousands gathered at Atlanta's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church to honor all of the lives lost to gun violence.

Ebenezer is the same church that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spread his message of non-violence. King's message is something Pastor Raphael Warnock said the congregation carries with them every day.

"There really is no need for assault weapons in today's society," Warnock said. "These are weapons of warfare, and right here in the state of Georgia, there are some 20,000 machine guns in the homes of our neighbors."

The call for stricter gun laws is in response to the tragic shooting in Newtown, CT, and to remember the victims who have been killed in some of the United States' most violent cities.

"Newtown occurs in cities across our county every day," Warnock said. "The rate of gun violence and danger in many communities in Chicago, Detroit and D.C. is worse than it is in Afghanistan."

Warnock applauds President Barack Obama for pushing Congress to enact stricter gun laws but said it takes the people to rise up and push the politicians to take action.

"The only way this is going to happen is you really have to have a ground swell in community, a grass roots movement," Warnock said.  "We are sorely mistaken if we think we can sit silently in our homes, and somehow Washington will straighten this mess out.   And that won't happen tonight without pressure from the people."
