An Atlanta police officer is recovering after his patrol car was struck from behind early Wednesday morning.

Around 1 a.m., the officer, who police have not identified, was working an accident on I-20 westbound, east of Maynard Terrace.

The officer was sitting inside his vehicle in the far left lane of traffic with the blue lights activated when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Kerry Edwards.

His patrol car traveled approximately 100 feet after impact.

The officer complained of back pain and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He was treated and released.

Edwards and his passenger, Brent Gills, were examined on the scene by DeKalb County EMS.

Edwards was charged with driving too fast for conditions, operating an unsafe vehicle, violation of the Move Over Law and operating a vehicle without valid insurance.
