Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines adds hundreds of jobs

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines gave the green light to hire 400 flight attendants this year, many of them for overseas flights.

"It's very positive that we're hiring so many people. Glad to have them," Delta flight attendant Shelia Stancil White said.

White welcomed Delta's newest flight attendants with open arms. She's been flying in the sky for 17 years.

"It is a very positive sign that we are seeing a lot of movement at Delta, and it's great that people want to apply," White said.

Roughly one-third of the hires will be people who speak the language in some of the overseas cities where Delta flies. Delta is looking for applicants who are bilingual speakers fluent in Hindi, Mandarin or Japanese.

"I think the industry is coming back," White said.

Delta says it has received more than 43,000 applications - two applications every minute.

"Now that is a shocker, but that is how the industry is. Delta is growing by leaps and bounds, and we want to be No. 1," White said.

Two years ago, Delta added 1,000 flight attendants, including recalling 425 from furlough. Officials told us the hiring doesn't mean Delta is growing. They have said the company will do the same amount of flying next year as it did in 2012.
