Homeowner shoots intruder in Walton County

WALTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

There were frightening moments for a Loganville family forced to fight back against a robber chasing them in their own home Friday afternoon.

A mom and her twin 9-year-old children tried hiding near the attic - but the crook wouldn't back down.

Police say the crook was armed with a crow bar and the terrified woman inside the home opened fire on the crook, striking him five times.

It all happened around noon Friday at the Henderson Ridge subdivision in Walton County.

Investigators say Paul Lee Slater is in critical condition and in an intensive care unit at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.

Cops said Slater used a crowbar to bust open the front door, and when he heard the woman call out to her children, he gave chase.

Investigators said Slater then chased the family into a crawl space near the attic - and when he opened a door, the mother opened fire striking him five times.

Police said Slater stumbled out of the house, got into a car and crashed into a tree line in an apparent get-away attempt.

The woman and her children ran to a neighbor's home for help. Vernon Rumphrey is thankful she had a firearm during the home-invasion.

"Thank God the homeowner had a .38," said Rumphrey. "I'm not saying you should shoot people but you're going to defend your young children, for a woman, I think you should have a weapon."

Police don't think the family was specifically targeted, just that Slater didn't realize anybody was home.

Slater also has an extensive criminal history according to police.
