Hit-and-run driver strikes Atlanta police cruiser on I-75

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta Police Department issued a statement Sunday updating Officer Osbert Beckles condition.

Beckles is recovering after a hit-and-run driver struck his vehicle along I-75 Friday night.

In the statement, APD wrote:

"Officer Beckles remains in serious condition in Grady's ICU but his condition has been improving and we are hopeful that he will be moved from the ICU into a regular room within the next day or two."

Beckles was taken to Grady Hospital for broken bones and injuries to his head and chest.

The accident closed two right lanes of the interstate near Northside Drive.

A police spokesman told CBS Atlanta that Beckles was conducting laser readings on motorists when a driver struck his patrol car and then took off on foot.

An officer with the Georgia State Patrol soon apprehended the hit-and-run driver, identified as Scott Eugene Welker, 45, from Kennesaw, and placed him under arrest.

Welker has been charged with driving under the influence, serious injury by motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and other charges.
