Water back on after massive pipe burst

Posted: Updated:

Some residents in DeKalb County are a whole lot happier after getting their water back early Sunday morning.

Hundreds of residents lost their water Saturday morning when a 50-year-old pipe on Clairmont Drive burst and turned the major thoroughfare into a raging river.

Crews fixed the pipe early Sunday morning, but that was just the beginning.

Rafael Guzman was one of the residents who lost water. "I'm very grateful to have that water. You don't know how much water means to you until you're missing it," said Guzman.

And for some residents it was the little things that meant the most.

Wesley McAfee was another resident happy to have his water back. "I get up at five every morning and make coffee. My coffee tastes pretty good," said McAfee.

But for most residents they didn't need coffee to wake up Sunday. There was a lot of noisy construction to help get everyone up as crews try to get the road put back together.

Residents said it was noisy, but they know the workers have to do what they have to so they can finish the job.

"I don't blame them. Get it placed and get it done because a lot of people use that highway," said McAfee.

Public work crews said one lane of traffic in each direction should be open in time for rush hour traffic Monday morning.
