Henry County fire kills 1, injures another

HENRY COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A teenager tried to save his family when he smelled smoke. He alerted his parents, but was burned while trying to save his older sister.

The fire started at the home on Highway 138 in Stockbridge in Henry County. Brother-in-law Douglas Hilko said 15-year-old Michael Haney went back inside the house to save his 25-year-old sister, Karen Prichard. Despite his best efforts, she sadly didn't make it. And firefighters had to go in and rescue him.

"It's heartbreaking. She was mentally challenged. She had a good heart, good spirit, everything about her was good. Don't know what went wrong, what happened," Hilko said.

Hilko said it pains him to look at the house he shared with his in-laws. The fire claimed the life of his sister-in-law and injured his brother-in-law.

"I'm not really sure how it happened. He woke up screaming, hollering 'fire, fire' and got the parents out, and then the parents had come out and Karen was still in there, and he went back in to try to save her and the dad couldn't do it, and he never came back out," Hilko said.

Firefighters had to rescue Haney. He's being treated at Augusta's burn unit for smoke inhalation and burns to his body.

"I think he's brave, one of the bravest people I know," Hilko said.

Hilko wasn't home Saturday night. When he looks at the burned out room he, his wife and their two kids share, he can't help but think about how the tragedy might've been worse.

"I pray to God my kids weren't in the house. If they had been in there and my wife, they probably wouldn't have made it," Hilko said.

Hilko hopes their two Chihuahuas turn up some where.

Fire investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.
