Local candlelight vigil for victims of rape in India

ATLANTA (CNN/CBS ATLANTA) -

Dozens of people showed their support for victims of rape in India during a candlelight vigil Sunday in Gwinnett County.

The vigil was held at Global Mall in Norcross.

The issue has recently dominated international headlines since a 23-year-old New Delhi woman was savagely gang raped by five men and left lying in a street. She later died.

Global Mall owner and activist Shiv Aggarwal said, "We want to give the message that the life of women in India should be more safe and also they should be more fearless to go out anytime of the day and night and do their duties and whatever they want to do, just like in the United States."

Activists say India needs a massive overhaul of how sexual violence against women is treated.
