GEAUGA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -
Lawyers have made a request for a delay in the trial of admitted school shooter, TJ Lane. The judge has granted it but has not set a new date.
The judge agreed that a delay is necessary. He is asking the attorneys to return to court later in the month with an estimate on how long of a delay is necessary.
Both sides seem to agree that they need a delay in the trial to go over "voluminous" discovery in the case. Much of that discovery likely centers on the defense claim that Lane was insane at the time of the shootings.
Lane listened to the proceedings without showing any emotion.
Police say Lane entered the cafeteria at Chardon High School last February and opened fire. 17-year-old Russell King, Jr., 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor and 16-year-old Demetrius Hewlin were killed in the shooting. 17-year-old Nick Walczak remains paralyzed from the waist down. 18-year-old Joy Rickers and a 6th, unidentified victim were treated and released from the hospital.
Lane was recorded in a police cruiser after he was picked up and read his rights saying "I shot people." An officer asked why and he responded "I don't know." He faces life in prison if convicted.
