Atlanta police search for armed taxi robbery suspect

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Atlanta police are on the lookout for a man who robbed a taxi cab driver in Midtown in the early morning hours of New Year's Eve.

It happened around 12:40 a.m. in the 900 block of Peachtree Street near Ponce de Leon Avenue when the cab driver picked up a fare.

The driver talked to CBS Atlanta News but did not want to be identified, and said that once the man got inside the cab, he asked to be brought to Morehouse College.

"He was like a normal guy," said the driver. "He spoke good English. We talked while going though the ride."

But they never made it to the college campus, and the driver now believes the request was just a line the man used to get him to let his guard down.

The man eventually forced the driver to turn off into a neighborhood near the intersection of Lee Street southwest and Tucker Avenue.

"He put the gun to my head and asked for the money," said the driver.

The driver said he believes he survived the robbery because he was trained to stay calm and cooperate.

"The first thing I thought, I will never see my family," he said.

The suspect got away with about $200 in cash. The driver was not injured.

If you have any information or recognize the suspect, call Atlanta police or leave an anonymous tip at (404) 577-TIPS.
