Resident: DeKalb County sanitation workers threaten him for holiday tips

Posted: Updated:

People who live in the Murphy Candler Park neighborhood of Brookhaven said that some of the DeKalb County Sanitation workers who pick up recyclables threatened homeowners to pay them gifts or tips for the holidays, or they'd be back to collect.

A number of residents told CBS Atlanta's Mike Paluska the workers approached at least five different homes asking for gift cards or tips because they were snubbed around the holidays.

"He said, ‘I think you guys missed me on Christmas,'" resident Mike said.  Mike did not want his last named used for fear of retaliation for reporting the worker to DeKalb County officials.

"I told him my wife takes care of that and then he more or less said, ‘We'll be back next week, put the donation underneath the mat or we will pick it up,'" Mike said.

Mike doesn't know if the man who approached him was the same person who threatened other people in the neighborhood.

One woman who also did not want to be identified said the person who picks up the recyclables and the driver asked for money.

"I am pretty scared they will be back," the woman said.

According to Burke Brennan, a spokesman for DeKalb County, they are aware of the complaint.

"The Sanitation Division has only recently learned of these allegations," Brennan said.  "The employee has been reassigned to another route until the administrative investigation is complete. If the allegations prove true, we will take immediate corrective personnel action."

Mike said he came forward to stop this problem before it gets worse.

"It is not right for our service guys to come to the door and start solicitation for gifts or monies," Mike said.  "Do I want him fired? No.  Do I want disciplinary action? Yes."

Recyclables are picked up Thursday.  Mike and other neighbors said they will be extra vigilant for fear of any retaliation.
