Residents without heat may be forced to move

Posted: Updated:

Residents at Washington Arms Apartments located at 3030 Washington Rd. received notices on their front doors Wednesday warning that the buildings are uninhabitable.

Meridian Management Group, which manages the property, told CBS Atlanta News to contact the on-site manager. However, He was not present on site and did not return our calls.

A spokesperson from the city of East Point, James Hammond, told CBS Atlanta News the apartments failed an inspection when during the process of trying to receive a Certificate of Occupancy for new ownership.

"During the inspection it was revealed the units did not have adequate heating, which raises a concern for health and public safety," said Hammond. "The 48-hour notice warns that the city will shut off the water if the problems aren't corrected."

There are 40 units but it's unclear if all are occupied.

Resident Brenda Wise who moved in July of 2012, told CBS Atlanta News that she paid her rent for the month of January only to receive the notice from the city on Wednesday.

"The manager did not tell what was going on. We are not getting any answers," said Wise.

Wise said she has not had heat all winter long and has complained to no avail.
