General Motors IT Innovation Center to create 1K jobs in Roswell

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Nathan Deal joined General Motors Thursday to announce the opening of a new IT Innovation Center in Roswell.

GM will be hiring 1,000 high-tech workers to staff the facility.

The governor says it's a sign the local economy is bouncing back.

"I think Georgia is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the rebound and that's what we've been trying to do, is to lay the foundation so that when the economy recovers as it appears it may now be doing that we are a place that people will look to for new job opportunities and for expanding existing businesses that are already here," Deal said.

Officials made the big announcement on the Georgia Tech campus.

GM would like recent college graduates to make up about 35 percent of their workforce.

"This is an opportunity for people who are from the Atlanta area to come home in terms of the jobs that were created, and we're certainly going to take advantage of the fact that people are going to want to come back here and relocate," GM Chief Information Officer Randy Mott said.

The governor said this announcement puts our recession in the rearview mirror and helps drive our economy in metro Atlanta while providing a big boost to Roswell.

"It means prosperity, it means full employment, it means better schools, it means more taxes to put in recreation, it means better transportation," Roswell Mayor Jere Wood said.

General Motors will begin hiring IT professionals immediately, which is sure to have a positive ripple effect on our state's economy.

"Oh it's a wave, it's not a ripple.  We're going to catch this wave and ride it," Wood said.

GM is looking for software developers, project managers, database experts, business analysts and other IT professionals.
