Smash and grab burglars hit East Atlanta Village

Posted: Updated:

Thieves armed with a cinder block made a mess - and made off with a lot of expensive clothing in a smash-and-grab burglary.

It happened at a clothing store in the East Atlanta Village at the corner of Flat Shoals and Glenwood avenues in southeast Atlanta, and the crooks were after high-end shirts and bags.

The break-in happened early Wednesday morning at a store called Grease Monkeys there, and the crooks got away with the crime right in the middle of the village.

The burglars were in and out in just two minutes, and the store's owner says they were dressed like a cleaning crew.

"We have great video," said Joe Grondalski, the store's owner. "We have footage from the second they entered to the second they leave."

Grondalski said he got a phone call from Atlanta Police informing him of the break-in.

"One person went directly to the cash box, tore that out and returned it to the truck while the other one was inside shopping," said Grondalski.

Signs reading 'stolen' now hang where the ripped-off merchandise once hung. Grondalski is out more than $1,000 worth of clothing and $400 in repairs - making up the loss will be tough.

"This economy is not all that great, and to have a kind of loss like that is a real punch in the gut," said Grondalski.

Grondalski hopes somebody might know the crooks caught on video and turn them in to police.
