ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A woman indicted in the vehicular homicide death of a veteran Atlanta police officer has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty on Friday.

Chasity Jones, 22, of Stone Mountain was indicted in February 2012 in the death of officer Gail Thomas.

"I apologize to the family for everything that you have been through," Chasity Jones said.

On Jan. 24, 2012, Thomas was directing traffic away from an accident to which she had responded at the Brookwood Interchange on the downtown connector in Atlanta.

According to police, Jones was driving the Honda Civic that hit and instantly killed Jones while she was diverting traffic.

"It's been very hard mentally, physically my father had a stroke," Thomas' brother Earl Thomas said. "We miss her very much."

Jones was arrested and charged with four counts of first degree vehicular homicide, two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, two counts failure to obey an authorized person directing traffic, failure to maintain a lane and possession of an open container of alcoholic beverage while operating a vehicle.

On Friday Atlanta Police Chief George Turner described how difficult the year has been for her as he asked for justice.

"She will never ever forget the pain," Chief Turner said.  "You honor we ask for the maximum sentence the law allows for this particular crime."
