An Atlanta police officer is recovering at an area hospital after he was shot in the face Friday night.

According to Atlanta Police Lt. Paul Guerrucci, Officer Reggie Robinson, 35, was shot in the face while investigating a possible drug deal in the 800 block of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard.

Robinson was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is now focusing on recovery.

During questioning, the suspect, Frank Nance, 20, ran from officers and opened fire on Robinson.

A few blocks away, police took Nance into custody near Victoria Place and Oglethorpe Avenue Southwest. Police also recovered one weapon.

"A couple of guys running this way, and then police started running this way, and then I heard pop, one pop and that was it," witness Marie Lambert said.

Lambert was out walking her dog when she heard the shots and saw someone lying on the ground.

According to Guerrucci, Robinson was able to communicate to a degree with responding officers on scene.

They have been unable to talk to him at the hospital because of the wound to his face.

On Saturday, Nance was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a felon, and cocaine possession and is being held without bond.
