Young Buford basketball player to be laid to rest

Posted: Updated:

Funeral services were scheduled to take place Saturday for a young Buford basketball player who collapsed during a game.

Jeremy Nelson, 12, of Buford, had been playing in the Gwinnett Basketball league at the Suwanee Sports Academy last weekend when he collapsed. He died shortly after that at the Gwinnett Medical Center.

The Gwinnett County medical examiner determined that he died from natural causes. He said Jeremy had marked pulmonary edema, or fluid in his lungs. Tests were under way to determine what caused the fluid to fill his lungs.

Jeremy became the latest Buford athlete to die while doing what he loved: playing a sport.

Just down the street from Jeremy's home lives the family of Adam Smith, a Buford High School junior who collapsed in October. Smith had been training on the school's football field as part of his basketball training and died days later.

Last January, Buford High School football coach Ryan Daniel had been playing basketball before school began and collapsed and died as well.

Funeral services for Jeremy were scheduled for noon at Greenforest Community Baptist Church at 3250 Rainbow Drive in Decatur. Burial was scheduled to immediately follow at White Chapel Cemetery in Duluth.
