CBS Atlanta gets action for woman who paid for headstone but didn't get it

Posted: Updated:

CBS Atlanta reporter Bernard Watson asked the Rev. Fred Gambrell Tough Questions about his headstone-making business after an Atlanta woman said she paid for a headstone for her mother but Gambrell never delivered it.

"What is going on here with the headstone?" Watson asked.

"I got it here. We are getting ready to set it. It's a beautiful stone," said Gambrell.

Joan Glass doesn't like the stone she has been waiting for.

"It was supposed to have angels all around her face and her name is spelled wrong," said Glass.

Glass said she paid Gambrell $1,100 for her mother's headstone. She said he promised to deliver it in four to six weeks. She said that was nearly four months, dozens of unreturned calls and countless excuses ago.

"On Monday he said he put his wife in the hospital and his niece died at two that morning," said Glass.

Watson asked Gambrell why it took so long to deliver the headstone.

"I was just waiting on my suppliers and the weather conditions. I am a small businessman, so I had a lot of breakdown of equipment and that kind of thing. I do apologize to Ms. Glass for being so slow about it, but it is here now and I'm sorry and I apologize to the family," Gambrell said.

Joan said she's thankful that CBS Atlanta got action for her, but she doesn't accept Gambrell's apology and is only reluctantly accepting the headstone.

"Her name is Mae capital Belle. On here he has Mae lowercase belle and he just sat some angels on the stone, but it was supposed to be all around," said Glass. "I am not satisfied with the work, but because of his delivery and because of his ethics and how he operates, I am going to accept this because if he leaves today, I may not ever see him again," Glass said.
