Rockdale County firefighters hand out smoke detectors

ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The Rockdale County Fire Department has kept hundreds of smoke detectors inside a special room at its headquarters in Conyers, GA, but not for much longer.

On Thursday, many of them will have new homes.

"We are going pretty much door to door," said Michael Morris, with the Rockdale County Fire Department. "We had an engine company go out yesterday and pass out flyers, that way the community is aware that we are going to be out there tomorrow at 5 p.m. Once we get out there, we will assist anyone that needs help with a smoke detector or replacing the batteries."

Giving away smoke detectors is nothing new for the Rockdale County Fire Department. It distributes them on a semi-routine basis, but Thursday will be different.

Firefighters are going to the same neighborhood where a fire killed four children and critically hurt their mother, Reba Glass, last week.

"Having smoke detectors does save lives. They are very important to have for a single person living in a house or an eight-person family dwelling," Morris said.

Fire investigators said Glass' home did not have a smoke detector upstairs, and the one downstairs did not have a working battery in it. Investigators said the family would have had a better chance to survive if both detectors were working.

"The firefighters that have families, it really hits home," Morris said. "It makes everyone essentially wake up and say, 'You know, we need to start practicing this, make sure our smoke detectors work because they work and they save lives.'"
