A Creekview High School teacher was arrested Wednesday afternoon after the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department received information that he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student.
Matthew Tamanini, 31, of Canton, is charged with two counts of sexual assault against a person in custody.
Investigators believe the relationship with the 16-year-old student has been going on for around four months and believe that the assaults occurred on school property on at least two occasions.
Tamanini, who is a drama teacher at the school, has taught at Creekview for six years.
The school district released the following statement:
"On behalf of the Superintendent, this is to advise that Matthew Tamanini, a Creekview High School drama and English teacher, was reassigned to a non-school worksite this morning due to a criminal investigation underway by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.
"The principal of Creekview HS was made aware of the allegations on Tuesday, and the Cherokee County School District Police Department was alerted. The Superintendent immediately authorized an internal investigation on Tuesday; this action authorized the CCSD Police to contact the Sheriff's Office, which began a criminal investigation this morning.
"Tamanini was hired by CCSD in May 2007 to teach at Creekview HS.
"A letter explaining the situation to Creekview HS parents/guardians will be sent home with students today.
"CCSD's standard operating procedure relative to continued employment pending the outcome of an investigation will apply."
Tamanini is in custody at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center with no bond and is scheduled to go before a judge Wednesday evening.
