ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A number of students from an Atlanta high school were injured in a school bus accident that happened Wednesday afternoon in northwest Atlanta, police said.

The accident happened at the intersection of Hightower Road Northwest and Saint Joseph Avenue Northwest where a white pickup truck hit the school bus carrying students from Douglas High School, Officer John Chafee said.

Approximately 27 to 30 students were complaining of minor neck and back pain as a result of the accident, Chafee said. They were all put on another bus and taken to Children's at Hughes Spalding to get checked out. No one was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Police said parents could pick up the students involved in the accident at the hospital.

After sideswiping the bus, the driver of the pickup truck took off from the scene of the accident. Charges are pending against that driver upon arrest.

The bus only received minor damage in the accident.
