Creekview High School drama teacher Matthew Tamanini, 31, went before a judge on Wednesday for his first appearance on sexual assault charges.

Tamanini is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student at the school.

He is the second teacher at the school charged with having sex with a student. In the fall, special education teacher Adam Bearden, 31, was accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student.

Verna Miller's son attends the school and is worried about the two cases. "I mean you send your kids to learn and you have to worry ... something will happen," said Miller.

"Both incidents (Tamanini and the Bearden case) were consensual. The one in November occurred off-campus. This one occurred on-campus, and that's the difference between the two," said Lt. Jay Baker, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

It doesn't matter if it was consensual, as a teacher/student sexual relationship is a felony in Georgia.

Officers say Tamanini and the girl's relationship started four months ago. A parent of one of the girl's friends alerted the school district on Tuesday. On Wednesday, officers arrested Tamanini. He is charged with two counts of sexual assault against a person in custody. A judge set his bond at $44,400.

The Cherokee County School District said Tamanini taught at the school for six years. CBS Atlanta News obtained his personnel file and it appears clean until now. The district reassigned him to a non-school worksite pending the outcome of the case.

"The teacher knows, the kids know - they know that are not supposed to be together, so why put yourself in that position," said Miller.

The school district said the principal of Creekview will meet with staff to review ethical behavior.

Tamanini also taught at a local drama school. The owner of the school said Tamanini started in September and she fired him on Tuesday as soon as she found out about the charges.

As of Wednesday night, Tamanini was still in the Cherokee County Jail.
