More homes in Rockdale County have working smoke alarms thanks to local firefighters. They handed out free detectors Thursday evening to families in the neighborhood where four children died in a house fire.
Officials say having the alarms and an escape plan are very important.
"Once they go off it's very important to know what to do and how to get out of your house. And, that's why it's a good practice to have a home escape plan," said Michael Morris from the Rockdale County Fire and Rescue Department.
This comes more than a week after a 6-year-old boy playing with a lighter started a fire that killed his four siblings. His mother tossed him out of a window to safety and was badly burned trying to save the other children.
There were no working smoke alarms in their home.
