Thousands expected at Marietta gun show

Posted: Updated:

A gun show in Marietta is expected to draw thousands who want to purchase firearms and ammunition this weekend.

It is the first gun show in Metro Atlanta since President Barack Obama unveiled plans for tighter gun controls.

"I think that guns are an essential part of an American government," said Michael Cowart, who will sell part of his gun collection. "The people who need to be armed to ensure the politicians that we can prevent from being dominated by them."

Cowart was among the dealers setting up for the two-day gun show at Jim Miller Park.

The Fulton County Republican Party plans to have a table set up so people can sign a petition urging state and federal lawmakers to protect their right to bear arms.

"President Obama started this week and it's the first volley from him to cut down on our Second Amendment rights so we're standing up right away," said party chairman Roger Bonds.

However, local Democrats said they are concerned because buying a gun at a gun show does not require background checks.

"It's fine to have gun shows but we also have to leverage the fact that at gun shows, that's where this loop hole exists," said Rashad Richey, the political director for Georgia Democrats.  "That loop hole allows convicted felons to obtain some of the worst weapons that America has."

The gun show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
