ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A Cincinnati Bengals player was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Thursday after a loaded pistol was found in his carry-on luggage.

Airport police arrested Andre Smith after Transportation Security Administration employees found the .380 pistol at a security checkpoint around 4:50 p.m., according to a TSA spokesman Jon Allen.

Officers removed the gun from the carry-on and took Smith to the Clayton County Jail.

The gun discovered on Thursday was the third firearm found at a TSA checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson in 2013, Allen said.

Allen also said that more firearms were found at TSA checkpoints in 2012 than in 2011, up from 1,320 to 1,548.

The TSA does allow firearms to be transported in checked luggage, but not carry-on luggage.
