TSA will remove full-body scanners

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (CBS46) -

The TSA will remove controversial full-body scanners from airports across the country.

The TSA said 174 backscatter body scanners, called "virtual strip searches" by many travelers, will be removed from 30 airports by June.

The move comes after the scanner's maker, Rapiscan, told Congress it couldn't meet the deadline to install privacy software.

Other machines that display a generic outline of the human body will still be used.

The TSA said getting rid of the machines will make security lines move more quickly.
