A gun rights group in Georgia is demanding that the city of Carrollton and Carroll County stop banning guns at local parks.
GeorgiaCarry.org has delivered letters to the mayor and the chairman of the county commission. The letter said banning guns at parks is a violation of state law and illegal.
"We just want to have the right, wherever we are, to protect ourselves and our family," said the group's executive director Jerry Henry. "It's really that simple."
Henry said Georgia law does not ban guns in parks so local municipalities cannot either. He said his group sued and won a similar lawsuit in Coweta County.
The idea drew mixed reaction from those at the Carrollton Greenbelt on Monday.
"I don't feel that you necessarily need a weapon here," said Erica Cheek who was at the park with her two sons. "However, you are entitled. That is your Second Amendment right, and you do have that liberty to carry a gun where you do choose so."
However, others said guns have no place at parks.
"It's just dangerous for my grand kids," said Teresa Gorman. "I just don't think it's right to have firearms out where there's a lot of people."
Carroll County Commission Chairman Marty Smith told CBS Atlanta News that he has the county attorney now researching whether the ordinance passed in 2003 is in fact legal.
Carrollton Mayor Wayne Garner did not return an e-mail.
"There's a lot of people that run in some of these parks," said Henry. "There was one with the lady up in North Georgia a couple years ago where she was raped, robbed and killed. That's why you need it because there is a danger out there."
