ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The soulful sound of gospel music filled the sanctuary at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church as people there celebrated and remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"Martin Luther King stood up that day and said we can't fight this with guns, put your guns up," said Bernice King, his daughter.

Bernice King was his only child at the celebration. She was there with his sister and other family members as the event opened with a message from Pres. Barack Obama.

"Dr. King was above all a champion for justice. He inspired a generation with his example."

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's famous 'I have a Dream' speech in Washington, students of various ages and ethnicity took part in quoting it.

"I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood."

Two men in the audience traveled from Memphis to take part in the celebration. Baxter Leak and Alvin Turner had a special connection with Dr. King. They were among the sanitation workers Dr. King went there to help.

"This was an experience. I was proud to be here. Each year we have it in Memphis at the Civil Rights Museum where he was assassinated," said Turner.

After the celebration ended, several stayed and watched Obama's inauguration. This year had a special meaning for Bernice King because one of the Bibles the president put his hand on belonged to her father.

"To sit and witness him place his hand - it was on top of Lincoln's Bible, my father's was right underneath - was incredible. It, for me, was meaningful because the most important part of my father's work was the fact that he was a pastor," said Bernice King.
