MCDONOUGH, GA (CBS46) -

A defense attorney is now searching for justice after dodging bullets as he answered his front door.

Gil Maxwell was shot at his home on Chanda Cove in McDonough early Sunday morning.

Two suspects remain in the Henry County Jail charged in the case.

Maxwell told CBS Atlanta News that his family is still shaken up by it all.

"I heard this pop, pop, pop, pop. And for the first four pops I didn't know what was going on," said Maxwell.

Maxwell said a young woman rang his doorbell moments before the gunfire.

"I said, 'What are you doing here, August?' She looked very disheveled. Her pupils were dilated," said Maxwell.

Maxwell said 18-year-old August Groover came to his front door as 18-year-old Malcolm Dabney stood at the end of the driveway and opened fire on him.

He said all he could do was run and duck for cover.

"The gunman followed me with his weapon as I ran across the house," said Maxwell.

Maxwell said as an attorney, he has never represented either suspect.

But. he told CBS Atlanta News Groover had a brief relationship with a struggling young man he and his wife had recently taken in.

The couple has taken in and helped out a number of young people over the years.

"My wife has been the primary person. I've just been a willing participant. She's a nurturer," said Maxwell.

The couple is now disturbed that their kindness could have very well cost them their lives.

"When he stopped firing, the first thing that went through my mind is if he comes down this driveway and reloads, everyone in my family was going to die."

According to the McDonough police report, the gun has not been found. The suspects allegedly tossed it in a neighborhood.

Maxwell is hoping police can find it to help stiffen the charges against the duo.
