Braves deliver anti-bullying message to students

Posted: Updated:

Braves players delivered a unique message to young fans on Friday. Instead of hitting homers, they ran home an anti-bullying message. It's part of the Anti-Defamation League's No Place For Hate initiative.

Students at PATH Academy in DeKalb County welcomed their Major League visitors with their best tomahawk chop. Hearing one of their role models say it's not cool to bully but it is cool to be nice brought the message home for many students.

"I think in any school there's always going to be the bullies. The kids that think they're cool cause they can pick on somebody," shortstop Tyler Pastornicky said.

Pastornicky, First Baseman Freddie Freeman, Manager Freddi Gonzalez and others took time out to answer questions and talk to students about being kind and standing up for others.

"I went to a school where there's a lot of bullying going on, so it's something I wanted to share with the kids and talk to the kids about. There's no place for it here," Freeman said.

"Treat people like you want to be treated and with respect. Hating people or criticizing people is easy. I think coming to someone's defense is a hard thing," Gonzalez said.

The Braves reinforced a message these students learn all year long - that there's no place for hate.

"It doesn't make you cooler to bully. That if you don't bully, that will make you cooler," student Carmina Rubio said.

It's that message the students said they will carry with them.

"They reminded us to not be bullies and if we see someone being bullied to help them," student Yuritizi Cazares said.

The ADL's No Place For Hate initiative is currently in more than 125 metro Atlanta schools.
