Shoppers beware: You may be paying a 4% surcharge for credit card use

ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) -

Starting Jan. 27, retailers will be allowed to tack on a 4 percent surcharge on your tab if you pay with a credit card.

For years, card issuers have made money on interchange fees, typically a 2 percent fee that stores pay your bank when you use a credit card at checkout.

These fees cut heavily into profits of some businesses like supermarkets and mom and pop shops.

Last year, a U.S. District Court ruled in favor of merchants being allowed to pass the cost of those credit card interchange fees to consumers.

CBS Atlanta News spoke with several national retailers and local boutique owners who say they likely will not pass this fee onto customers.
